About the Poinsettia Shot
The classic brunch cocktail — champagne, cranberry and triple sec — scaled down to a single sip. Named for the holiday flower it resembles: pale red-orange, fizzy on top, meant to telegraph festivity. The shot form works better than the full glass does, because the bubbly stays bright instead of going flat halfway through brunch.
Build it in order and serve immediately. Orange liqueur and cranberry go in the glass first; chilled sparkling wine goes on top, right before the drinker lifts it. Any dry sparkling wine works — prosecco for a lighter, fruitier shot; cava for a drier, more mineral one; actual Champagne if you want to be literal about the recipe’s origin. Club soda in place of wine makes a non-alcoholic sparkler for a mixed table. Serve as a welcome pour on Christmas morning or at a New Year’s Day brunch — the color and the fizz both suit the hour.
Substitutions
- Prosecco or cava both work.
- Club soda for a non-wine sparkle.
Batch version
For 12, batch liqueur and cranberry; top each with bubbly to order.
