About the Red, White and Blue Shot

The patriotic party trick. Three layers stack into a tidy flag in a glass: red grenadine on the bottom, clear peppermint schnapps in the middle, blue curacao on top. It is sweet and fruity with a cool peppermint streak through the center, and it looks far harder to make than it is.

How to get clean stripes

Density does the work. Grenadine is heaviest so it goes first; the clear schnapps is next, floated slowly over the back of a bar spoon; blue curacao, lighter still, tops it off. Pour gently and it holds three sharp bands. Full method in our layering guide.

Tips

  • A tall, narrow glass gives deeper, more dramatic stripes than a wide one.
  • Chill the liqueurs first; cold layers hold their line better.

The obvious pour for the Fourth of July. Find more stacks on the layered shots page.

Substitutions

  • Clear rum for the white band.
  • Chill everything for cleaner layers.

Batch version

Layered — build to order; chill bottles for crisp bands.
